What it Looks Like to Me
(part 3)
By: Jaden Sparks
That memory, being ripped from my family and them doing nothing to keep me under their protection. That was 4 years ago today. This “Boarding School” was filled with your worst nightmares, basically Halloween Town. Creepers and shadows that move along the walls of our school, trip students as each walk to their classes. Nobody blames them mostly because we don’t know what they are or what they are capable of.
The most we know is that they have personalities, some are nice and leave you alone, others are mean and trip and taunt you as you walk down the hallway. The Creepers on the other hand are more unified. They all have one shared personality and mood, in other words, if one’s mad the others are too.
The hallway I walk along is just one big corridor. Most of my classes are along this corridor but my least favorite is outside in the big garden. The brick walls that line the school are covered by vines in the garden. Great pink, red, and blue flowers bloom off of them. I walk in to the gardening class and I’m being stared down by all my classmates. “You’re late Miss Prombe…” He tilted his head down to look at me “again”. His glasses slipped down to the bridge of his nose. I quickly and quietly took my seat, having been humiliated.
Gardening is such a boring class, three times I fell asleep… Three...Times. My lab partner Hope Tysler, repetitively woke me up because of her enthusiasm for Gardening. By the time class was over I was ready to go to sleep, I walked to the street and waited on the bus to the dorms. The street is where most of the shadows meet, so being extra cautious is a must, they will do anything to have more friends. The bus makes its way around the corner very slowly, just in this instant a shadow wriggles around my ankle and up my leg…

I ran to my big sister’s arm. “Jacki!” She had just returned from what she calls “work without pay”, whatever that means. She always comes home drained of energy and tired. She never talks to me like she used to. “Come in Jacki.” Momma wanted to show her the surprise. Earlier two men came to our door with “OA”on their jackets with a seabird above it. They just waited for my sister to get home. Momma tried to offer them coffee, they just stood with their sad faces.
I am Abagail.
I walked into the house, the atmosphere felt different from usual, it felt heavier, more un-welcoming. I stepped down into the den and two men stood with their hands behind them and their neutral faces waiting for me…"Jacki these lovely men here are going to take you somewhere, clean and kind.” The words “clean and kind” sent me into immediate panic. “What do you mean clean and kind?” she smiled at me with her fat little face, “It’s a boarding school in a little town in Arizona called Pinetop-Lakeside ” One of the men in the corner shuffled uncomfortably and then spoke “We are of a sophisticated people. Our establishment was founded by a German immigrant from France named Abel Constance.” He was very monotone not making a higher part or a lower part of his sentence to me. My mother stood in front of me She looked as innocent as a five year old in a cookie jar, I knew she had done this knew Abagail was her favorite “Why?” I beckoned the sad thoughts into my mind only letting them flood not flourish.

Dear Abby
Reminder: We are not REAL counselors, just the CCI Journalism Staff! If you have a serious problem please talk to the counselors.
Dear Abby,
My Mom and Dad never get along and are always getting upset with each other. I always try to ignore them when they argue and yell at each other but it gets worse and worse every day. What should I do?
I think you should talk to your Mom and Dad separately, not together at the same time. You should definitely talk to a counselor about it because they might give you advice that your parents can’t. You should let your parents know how you feel. Remember, your parents may not get along, but they love you.
Dear Abby,
My boyfriend always hurts me. First I thought it was just a game but now it really bothers me. He hurts me, but nobody else knows about it. What should I do?
BREAK UP WITH HIM. You don’t need anyone who mistreats you like that. Let him know that you will not let him hurt you anymore. Talk to the counselors and talk to your parents too. Get help. Don’t keep it a secret. You deserve someone that will respect you.
Dear Abby,
My teacher doesn't put in my grades on time and I am failing some classes because I don’t know what I am missing. I have asked her multiple times and she said she would put them in and fix some zeroes, but she hasn't and now I’m sitting as a 50% average in the class. What should I do?
Ask your parents to contact the teacher. Sometimes a teacher will respond to a parent faster than to a student. If you still don’t get a response, have your parents contact Mr. Herd. He can talk to your teacher about the deadlines and ask her to put in the grades on time. Be sure you keep track of all of your assignments and turn them in on time. Keep all your graded papers.

Summer Plans
By: Haley Boland and Katie Peterson
Summer, the warmest of all four seasons especially in Texas! Are you going anywhere this summer? Maybe you’re going on a cruise, or you’re going to a family reunion? Or instead of leaving you stay home and hang out with friends and spend most other days watching Netflix in bed. Six students were asked how they were going to spend their summer.
Mari Dunn plans to go to Kemah Boardwalk to hang out with her friends to make this summer memorable. Ben Shain is going to Garner State Park. “Every year we go to Garner to hang out with family and friends,” Ben said. Dorie Poe will be playing in three national softball tournaments. Alexa Akers will be going to North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, California and Florida. Alexa said, “My family lives in North and South Carolina so we’re going to visit.” Jesus Flores will be hanging out with his friends in Galveston this summer. Sean Tran is going to Baylor music camp and Cabo. “I’m going to Cabo to fish and surf,” Sean said.
Are you going anywhere this summer? These guys are, make sure that you make Summer 2015 a memorable one.

Free the Hostages!
By: Ty Smith
I think that we should not pay the terrorist money to free hostages. They will take more hostages and want more money, and probably not give the hostages back and just kill all them. I know that they want the money but I don’t think that they would free the hostages. We should do something else besides giving them money. I would rather go to war for the hostages than give money. I say not give them money and go to war for the hostages. Help free the hostages.

Choir Powder Puff Game
By: Ariana Fernandez & Hannah Gay
This month the Symphonic and Concert Choirs are planning to have a powder-puff game. Breanna Hutchison explained it as, “A football game that the choir will take part in. The girls play as the football players and the boys are the cheerleaders. It’s basically a football game but roles are reversed.” The game will be the 7th grade girls against the 8th grade girls. Matthew Ovalle the 7th grade coach said, “Our strategies for winning the game is to go out on the field and to kick some butt and to watch out for Rachel Jurbala, Ariana Fernandez, and Hannah Gay on the opposing team.” Rachel Jurbala said, “I am playing quarterback I know a lot about football and I’m ready to play.” The 8th grade team coach Jaxson Brister said, “To win the game we must run the ball with precision and watch out for Luci Melcher and Zoe Smith on the 7th grade team.” Luci Melcher said, “I’m very excited to have the experience and to spend time with my friends.”
The powder-puff game will be like any other special occasion football game. Alma DeLeon and Miranda Hixson are in charge of the court. The powder-puff court will be like a homecoming court except with only one king or queen. Alma said, “Our jobs are to nominate teachers to go up for the queen or king of the powder puff.” They will have milk jugs in the teachers’ lounge with the nominees faces on it and staff will drop in change for the teacher they want to win. Miranda said, “I’m excited to see what teachers get nominated for king and queen.”
The game will take place Friday May 1st. All of the money raised from the game and donations will go to The Beacun a place for women who have suffered from domestic abuse.

So You Think You Can sing?
By: Sarah Burris and Aubry Chambers
Sophia Sereni won the privilege of representing CCI at the district competition, “So you think you can sing?” The competition was fierce. Mrs. Smith said, ”Sophia did fantastic! She sang “Mercy” by Duffy, and she had an amazing stage presence!”
There were six high schools, 11 intermediate schools, and 25 elementary schools that competed. Mrs. Smith said, “We were all so exited when she found out she made it! The competition was steep. When we heard her name we all jumped up and down and screamed!”
“This was Sophia’s third time to be a contestant and finalist, so she really wanted that trophy. We heard some of the other talented singers and we got really nervous. But she went out there and preformed her heart out and the judges crowned her champion!” said Mrs. Smith.
It’s really cool to know that we have a “So you think you can sing?” champion at our school! Sophia is really talented and she can do many amazing things.

Tucker said, “I had a great time dancing and getting down. I had a great time with my date Shana.” Ricky said, “I went to Formal because I thought it would be fun dancing and talking to friends that I don’t get to see often during school.” Derek Garcia and Fletcher Semmones went to Formal because they thought it would be really fun. 7 on 7
By: Asher Alberding and Max Flores
The season for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade was pretty good. For 6th grade their season was filled with lots of improving. Jacob Salazar agrees saying, “Our season was good because we have been getting better from playing good schools like Brookside.” 6th grade did really well towards the end of the season. They qualified for the state tournament in April.
The 7th grade season was tough even though, they fought with hearts of Jaguars. Dalton Slaughter said, “I think the season was hard fought as the team needed to get faster and needed to improve on catching.” Even though they came out defeated, they still worked hard to get the wins they deserved.
The 8th grade had one of its best season, as they won 6 games and lost 2 in their season. Asher Alberding said, “We came together as a team when we needed to, to get all the wins we needed.” The team had great communication as they move on to the state tournament.
The season for all 3 teams was well played and well fought. They all came out strong in the end and most will continue to fight hard as they move on to state.

By: Michael Caldwell
This year’s Spelling Bee was intense and full of excitement! Milo Kyle, a 6th grader, won this year’s Spelling Bee, and came in 6th place in the District Spelling Bee. Milo said, “I was very surprised that I won at our school. I didn’t expect to win. I just entered and hoped for the best. I was a bit scared and nervous to do this in front of people. But everyone gets a bit scared or nervous about these kind of events. I have done two other Spelling Bees in 4th and 5th grade and I got VERY nervous. But next year, I am not going to do the Spelling Bee again because the studying took up a lot of time and it was hard work.” His ELA teacher, Mrs. Harmon said, “I was VERY excited for him winning the school Spelling Bee and I supported him every step of the way.”

Are you looking for a sport that you can finally play? Well here’s your chance to play soccer. Try outs are April 22nd and 23rd (See coach Virani for details.) These two soccer athletes recommend anyone that has good skills to try out for soccer. You can also learn how to play if you make the team. Alejandro Ortega recommends you because he said “It’s a great experience to play soccer and its fun.” Coach Virani, last year’s boys’ soccer team coach, led them to victory and won the district championship. He said, “We were very hard working and all of that hard work gave us a very good result. The good result was that we won the district championship.” If you have good skills with a soccer ball this is your chance NOW to try out for the soccer team. Remember you need a physical on file in order to try out. (Try outs are March 22nd & 23rd)

Rodeo Art
By: Mar'Quan Sereal
Rodeo Art is a great thing to try next year if you like art. This year Rodeo Art was a great experience for me. 75 art students submitted rodeo art. “It was a good experience but it took me a lot of work to finish,” said Everrett Cunningham. If you’re planning on being in Pre-Ap again it will be good for next year in your portfolio. Brinana Smith said, “This was my first time doing rodeo art and I really didn't like how mine turned out at the end.” Rodeo Art gave many students the chance for their art to be shown and examined by other people. There were three levels of organization blue for first, white for second, and red for third. So try it out next year maybe it’ll be fun.

6th Grade Choir Pop Show
By: Peyton Fellows and Karla Granado
Our 6th grade choir just had their Pop-Show march 26th. Their concert was a great success and enjoyable to watch. All the 6th grade choir students had a blast doing what they like to do. Katherine Varela sang “grenade” as a solo. She said, “I liked how the boys and the girls got to combine a song. It sounded really cool.” Brenden Lane sang “When I was your man” as a solo. He said, “I like all the singing and watching the dancing. I also liked doing my solo.”
All of the 6th grade choir students enjoyed preforming and watching all of the dancing. All of the solos at the pop-show were amazing. Krissy Harris said, “I liked it and thought it was really fun. It was an incredible experience for a 6th grader.” Kaden Irby said, “It was really good. It was fun and nice to watch. I thought all of the dancing was really good.”
The choir directors were so proud of the 6th grade choir pop-show. Ms. Johnson said, “It was absolutely FABULOUS! Our 6th graders did an amazing job singing and dancing to some of their favorite songs. We had a blast. Our smizkroo (a select group of featured dancers) did a phenomenal job!”

Choir Trip to Splashtown
By: Madison Plotner
The CCI Symphonic and Concert Choirs are in for a treat this upcoming May. The four choirs will be taking a trip to Splashtown for their yearly festival.
The talented groups of singers will head to Splashtown in the morning and spend several hours there. Then they will proceed to their festival, where they will sing ‘Sit Down Servant’, ‘Alleluia, Alleluia!’, and ‘Gone Gone Gone’ in hopes of taking home a trophy. One of the songs, ‘Gone Gone Gone’, is the 8th grade farewell song for pop show.
One of the choir directors, Mrs. Smith said, “Since the music is familiar and the students want to win a trophy badly, I believe they will rise to the challenge.” She also stated, “One of my old college buddies invited the choirs to the festival.” The judges that the choirs will be singing to are veteran directors that are famous in Texas choral music.
The students can hardly wait for their exciting trip. Alexa Akers, a member of the Symphonic choir said, “I’m really looking forward to going to Splashtown with all of the wonderful CCI choirs.”

The Boys Next Door
By: Samayah Pearson
In February the Theatre Arts Production Class presented “The Boys Next Door”. It was about mentally ill people and the obstacles they go through in their everyday life and dealing with their differences and how they overcome them, Page Kasha tell us.
Page also says, voicing her favorite part in the play was the rat scene. “The rat gets lost in the apartment and everyone goes chaotic, bumping into everything and breaking lots of stuff in the apartment. It was really amusing to watch,” said Page.
Luci Melcher, working backstage and in charge of lighting, said, “I really enjoyed competing in UIL with this play.” She also expressed the fact that she thought Bryce Strickland, who starred in the play was amazing in it. Bryce was continuously admired by the audience on how he made the character come alive.
“I had so much fun working on this play with my friends. Acting in this play really gave me a new kind of respect for people suffering with a mental illness.” Bryce Strickland said about the play.
Lauren Vining admired the play and stated her favorite part was, “When they were at the house and the felt like they could be themselves.”
Loving the play and expressing his enjoyment, Mr. Plaisted said, “There was a scene where the mentally ill boy, who was the most profound character, was able to go in public and transform himself as if he was as ordinary as you and me. He did that by facial expressions and posture.” He said, “One reason this play worked was because it made you realize that when the play was over, mentally ill people couldn’t transform ordinary like the boy had in the play.”
At the end of February, Mrs. Silvas’s 8th grade class preformed this play in a UIL competition and won 4th pace in district competing with eight other plays. Bryce Strickland was awarded the “Best Male Honor in Cast” award and Alma Deleon was awarded “Best Honor in Cast Overall.”

Caution! Spanish speaking students ahead!
By: Lilliana Beltran
The Spanish 1A classes and the Spanish 1B classes are ending their 8th grade and 7th grade year with a field trip to Santikos Palladium AVX Entertainment. These students worked very hard to earn the privilege to go on this trip. The students will be seeing The Avengers: Age of Ultron subtitled in Spanish.
Alison Fernandez said the requirements to be eligible for the trip are, “We had to have a certain amount of Dojo points and less than three D-halls.” Mr. Santos said Dojo points are a reward program. He said, “My students worked really hard every day. They earned a total of 300 Dojo points for the year to go on this trip.”
This year will mark the third year Mr. Santos will be taking his students on a field trip. In previous trips, Spanish students have seen several movies. Hunter Smith liked the trip to see “Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1” and Alison Fernandez enjoyed seeing “X-Men”. Alison said, “I think this semester’s field trip will be better than last semester’s field trip.” Mr. Santos said last semester “There were some lines we had to wait in unfortunately. I wanted everything to go smoothly. It wasn’t the students’ faults, it was beyond our control.” This semester should be different. He said, “we’re going to a different place this time. They have a lot of fun activities and lots of food.”
Alison said she was excited about the trip because, “we get to go somewhere new and it’s a whole new experience.”

Orchestra
By Morgan Severson and Rachel Whitsett
CCI’s orchestra is blooming with talent this year! This year CCI has more beginners than ever before! “My favorite part about learning was hearing it's beautiful sound. I like to play with the orchestra rather than playing alone because I like how all the instruments sound together,” said Hayden Spurling, 6th grade cellist. “I like the way the viola sounds because it’s not the deepest sound but it’s not the highest sound. My favorite song is Rock Riffs because it sounds good with the other instruments,” said Layla Phillips, 6th grade violist. “I like orchestra because Ms. Dupere is a very nice teacher. My favorite song that she thought us is Rock Riffs because sounds very intense,” Tristan Lacy, 6th grade violinist. The beginners had a concert on Monday April 13th at Clear Falls High School. Deniva, 6th grade bassist said, “I think the concert went great! The best song was Rock Riffs because we played with enthusiasm and didn’t make any mistakes.”
The Philharmonic Orchestra has improved a lot this year! They have worked hard all year and are preparing for a competition at Six Flags on Saturday April 18th. “I like expressing myself through music and especially through the song Dragon hunter because of how energetic it is and how easy it is to keep the orchestra together,” said Fatinah Al Hmoud 7th grade, bassist. “I like the song Mystic Caravan because it sounds amazing with the other instruments and blends well,” said Chris Kurass 8th grade cellist.
The Symphony Orchestra recently went to UIL and did an amazing job! Our CCI Symphony proudly got all ones on their performance and sight reading! Makenzie Gibbons, 8th grade bassist said “I think that we played the best we possible could at UIL and definitely deserve all of our ones. I like sight reading because we get to show the judges our musical skills.” The Symphony Orchestra is also preparing for the coopetition at Six Flags! “I like playing the song Galena Miliwalkiee Breakdown because it sounds really good with the other interments,” said Katherine Bradley. “I love orchestra because everyone gets to contribute to making an amazing sound. My favorite song is Carol of the Bells because it is dramatic,” Randy Huynh, 7th grade violinist. Overall the CCI orchestra has performed very well this year and we hope they do very at Six Flags and future competitions!

Mrs. McCulloch said, “It looked like the kids enjoyed the trip to Mindtrekkers very much.” Mrs. Harmon said, “The kids loved the fieldtrip and it was so much fun.” Mrs. Harmon’s 3rd period class said their favorite station was the air guns that shot air out when you pulled back the handle. Not only did they have a great time but they learned too.

Are you looking for a sport that you can finally play? Well here’s your chance to play soccer. Try outs are April 22nd and 23rd (See coach Virani for details.) Last year’s soccer player Alejandro Ortega, played defender for the boys’ team, said, “It was pretty challenging to play soccer last year because there were a lot of opponents that we faced that were super good.” Samantha Andino, played as a defender for last year for the girl’s team, said, “It was pretty easy playing soccer last year because the other teams were not as competitive as us." These two soccer athletes recommend anyone that has good skills to try out for soccer.

Movie Review

Transformers - Transformers: Age Of Extinction was an amazing movie. I loved it and couldn’t get enough of it! The action sequences were amazing. I thought the new Autobots and Decepticons were a great addition, along with the Dinobots. They all add more flavor and depth to the story. When I saw it, I thought, “Holy cow, what a great movie! So robust and explosive. A bit too long though.” I rate it 3 and one-fourth stars out of 5.

Madden 15 category: sports
This thrilled based game by EA sports is the NFL year 2015. This game is the new and improved in this game there are new game modes and the carrier mode is improved. The graphics are also improved and more developed and the online version is has detailed and with better playing requirements. This gameplay is mostly recommended on the PS4 or the Xbox1 for great results. It is also more realistic. You can injure your player and will not be able to use that player for almost the entire season. When playing carrier mode you can upgrade players and teams. The AI is more developed when in gameplay against you or your other players. So this game requires more strategy and thinking than usual. There are also new glitches and cheat codes that can work to your advantage. There is a glitch to place your player across the field and score an automatic touchdown for your team. There’s also another glitch that can make your player tiny and can run through the players without getting touched. This game is a must have for the year of 2014.

Free Food Days? There is a new rule that is being put in place this year on the free food days. Instead of buying things such as cookies, soda, cupcakes and candies. Now we are only able to buy healthy foods.
She said:
I think it’s a good idea because people need to start eating healthier the healthier we eat the more we will be able to focus in class and the better our athletes can be. If we start eating healthier now then by the time we are adults it will be second nature and you won’t even have to think about it.
By: Ariana Fernandez
She said:
It’s not a big change for the people that are already healthy eaters, but for some it will be a big change. It won’t make as much money for the departments selling it because the people will see it and just think that it is the same thing that the cafeteria is selling except more expensive. All around I don’t think it’s a good idea. Because our free food days are like our days off. We eat healthy all the time and on our free food days we should get to eat whatever we want, not just healthy foods.

Advice Column
If you have a question or a problem you would like help with, turn it in to Mrs. Hawes (room 113 or 124).
Dear Abby,
My phone recently broke and I’m scared to tell my parents. What do I do?
Answer: Just tell your parents that you broke it and try to get a new one. It’s better to tell them instead of keeping secrets.
Dear Abby,
Everyone has a cell phone and I don’t. We’re using them in class and I feel like I’m letting the class down. What do I do?
Answer: I think you should ask a friend if you could partner up with them when doing activities with a phone. It would also be a good way to make friends.
Dear Abby,
I have a major test coming up and I have no time to study. What do I do?
Answer: I would randomly study during advisory or any down time you have, or get your parents or a friend to quiz you. You should also make time to see if you can go in for tutorials.
Dear Abby,
My parents are always fighting and it hurts me to see them constantly arguing because I love them both a lot. What should I do about this?
Answer: Sometimes when parents fight it may be caused by stress or some other things. You can talk to them both about it and tell them what is on your mind. There are always counselors here at the school to get you help too.
Dear Abby,
I am a new student here at CCI and nobody pays attention to me. There are a few people that have accepted me, but I need tips on how to make new friends here.
Answer: I suggest you start a conversation with them maybe at lunch or in one of your classes. You can talk about what you two have in common and maybe differences can give you something to talk about. You could also join a club.
Dear Abby,
My boyfriend is always talking about other girls and he goes to a different intermediate school. I sometimes feel like he has other girls in his life, other than me. I have no idea of what to do.
Answer: I think you should talk to him about it and have a mature conversation with him. Tell him what you think and how you feel about it. Maybe he feels the same way, or maybe he wants to talk about it too. Never assume about anything though, you never know until you talk to him about it!

Problems with the new IPhone 6? Ate nothing but Starbucks for a year? Killer ‘Atomic Wedgies?’ Bubble Wrap wallpaper?
Oh, all the crazed things packing our thoughts as we skim those particular questions; Umm, what? Could this get any more bizarre? This year the strange facts transform into major eye catchers; specifically the IPhone 6. It’s known to be slim enough to bend in the owner’s back pocket.
Yet, it’s not as astonishing as a woman, Beautiful Existence, who successfully ate nothing, but ‘Starbucks’ for an entire year. Wow!
“She must be very pretty,” said 7th grader, Myles Anderson. “She must have terrible breath, depending on what she drinks.”
Although, it’s nothing compared to a man slayed by an atomic wedgie. Is that even possible? Although, this death is odd; everyone has the upmost respect for his family and friends.
What if the things you use today were meant for something else when they were invented? Bubble Wrap wallpaper. “Where can I get some of that?” exclaimed 8th grader, Noelle Krueger. Apparently, the same bubble wrap we use for packaging was created for walls! “If I had some, I would rip it off the wall and stomp all over it,” stated Myles. Well, who wouldn’t?

Sherlock Holmes- The newest Sherlock Holmes show is by far one of the best shows produced all year. It has some original stories from the original Sherlock Holmes such as “The Hound of Baskerfield”. I watch an episode at least once a week and once it ends I start throwing a fit because it is so good and I can’t wait for the next episode. But then I calm down and watch another episode. My dad watches it with me and he was the one who introduced me to it. All-in-all, it is an amazing show with great characters, plots, and scenes. If I were to rate it, I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

Block Scheduling? [Block Scheduling is where your classes are split into everyday throughout the week] Ex; You would only have gym three days out of the regular five school days.
She said:
Block scheduling is not the best thing for students and the reasons are obvious. Some kids may love block scheduling because they get their classes every other day, but some kids including me wouldn’t like block scheduling because you don’t get some of your classes every day. You end up getting these classes every other day .What I’m saying is it will be better not to have Block Scheduling because you will not be able to have your classes everyday . Instead, you will only be in that class every other day.
By: Phoenix Felder
She said:
If you don’t already know, many schools have block scheduling for their students, which is where your classes are spread out into two days to the point where at least every other day you have different classes.
Block scheduling would be very helpful to students. It gives you a break between subjects so you aren’t piled with work every day and night. It would give us more time to do our homework and if you miss a day of school, you would only have to make up half of your classes instead of all of them. Block scheduling proportions your classes to make days easier for us students and that’s why I personally like it.

What It Looks Like To Me
A Story By: Jaden Sparks
You know how when you stare at something for too long, a face, a picture, your television? You start to see it morph, change its shape. A face of a beautiful young girl smiling and happy turn into a sad, depressed, mourning face that makes you want to hug her... You blink and it’s gone like it was never there.
I walked up the paved path. My feet moved the broken twigs and dead leaves to the side. I haven't been here since I was little, who knows what's happened since in this yard of broken dreams...
14 years ago I was twelve. I was being welcomed to a new school rather nicely I might add... I may or may not be lying a little bit.
It was about October when all of this started.
Walking down the hallway, my boots clicking along to the beat of my loud music, people always look at me weird for reasons unbeknownst to me. I seriously can't wrap my head around what is so off putting about a girl with her books walking down a hallway like everybody else, walking down the long stretch of hallway to math, last period.
As usual I wait till most of the student body has left the building so I have a very little chance of becoming a human pancake.
I walked up the clean paved path way to my house. "Jacki!!" screamed my little sister running towards me, hopping as she walked like an excited bunny.
I am Jacklynn.

CCI Art Club is an after school program where anyone in Art is welcome to join. Last year in Art Club there were a variety of projects. A few of the projects they did consist of painting the ceiling tiles, painting the windows in front of the office for every new season, and even doing the mural in the Science Hall. Art Club is in some ways different then Art Class because there is more freedom to express yourself.
Art Club is not just fun and games. It’s dedicated to the people who have a passion for art and express themselves in a way they can’t do with words. Keila Fulcher said she likes Art Club “Because it’s a way to show how creative I am to other people.” Stephanie Flores says “I like being creative. I think art is about expressing yourself on paper.”
If you are in Art Class and you are interested in joining Art Club interested talk to Mrs. Tracy in room 238.

Ready to Make a difference? Try Student Council
By: Stephen Ryan
Helping hands, donating, being nice, well, that’s just what Student Council is. Student Council is a group that helps out with school activities like Red Ribbon Week, recycling, and Drug Awareness. It is sponsored by Mrs. Golden. Cody Sute had chosen to be in Student Council last year and is now on his second year. He said, “I am still in Student Council because “It is very good to help out with the school”. He continued, “I think we will help in school activities. Now in depth with him he told me he thinks that he would help the school with important activities. He is excited about this school year because, he is ready to make a difference. He feels he can make a difference because, “I help out more than most people.”
The members are important so I wondered what they would be doing, Mrs. Golden said “They will be doing service projects like Red Ribbon Week and Drug Awareness. She said that she thought “the students would be successful. With all the activities the following question was if she thought the students would be good in that. She said, “I believe they will be good in activities.” She hopes to sell snacks on early dismissal days.
Meetings are usually on Thursday morning. Anyone can join Student Council, if you are interested, and want to make a positive difference at our school, talk to Mrs. Golden in room 116.
JUMPS
Want to get more involved at CCI? Four days a week, you can stay after school and get tutoring and play games.
Mondays and Wednesdays you get to play games. Soccer, Robotics, Art Club and computer games are a few of the choices.
Tuesdays and Thursdays are tutorials days. Teachers stay with you and help you with your homework. Just think, you could get your homework done before you even go home.
JUMPS students meet in the commons after school and have a snack and drink. You can be picked up at the end, or a bus can take you to your elementary school and you can be picked up there.
If you are interested, please talk to Mr. Golden, room 212. Your teachers also know about this and can give you more information.

ForSSA
By: Maria Hernandez
The ForSSA club is Rachel’s Challenge & SSA (Safe School Ambassadors) combined. This is the second year that CCI has had this club. SSA is mainly a kids’ club. What they do is go around the school and make sure that students aren’t bullying each other. Rachel’s Challenge is mainly about starting a chain reaction of kindness in and out of school.
Mrs. Melissa Smith, a family group leader, is looking forward to the New Year. She said she is looking forward to, “getting to know a whole new group of kids of good character who really want to work to improve the school’s climate”
Mrs. Paredes, a lead family group leader, has plans for ForSSA this year. She said, “the goal of ForSSA for this year is to be strategic about the projects we are involved in. We want to focus more on doing service projects in the community as a club and to continue to minimize bullying situations at school.”
Karina Martinez, 7th grade, said that her favorite part of ForSSA last year was, “doing the Field Trips and doing activities like the skits.” Austin Vining, 8th grade, said he joined ForSSA last year, “to prevent bullying in the school’s community.”
In order to be in ForSSA a teacher had to recommend you or you had to get an application from the student center. The deadline to apply was October 7th.

IOS8
With the new IOS8 update for Apple products two new apps were provided. The “Tips” app helps you with any new features you might have problems with. For example, to quickly respond to text messages swipe down on the “banner” and then you’ll be able to easily respond to texts without going out of your app. The Health app provides an easy way to keep track of your food intake, sleep, height, weight, steps and many more things that you usually wouldn't won’t to keep track of on your own.
Social Media
Instagram is a site and app where you can post pictures to share with your friends and family. Katie Peterson said, “I use Instagram because it’s an easy way to keep in contact with friends and family that live far away.” Snap Chat is another social media app where you can send pictures to a friend, but they only have a limited amount of time to see the photo, then the photo disappears. Natalie Cox said, “I use Snap Chat because it’s easy to connect with my friends and send them pictures they can’t save!” Even though the pictures “disappear” remember that the pictures that you post are there forever don’t forget to think before you post.

Audio/Visual
If you are interested in making movies here is your class …
By: Max Flores
The Audio/Visual Class is about making your own movies, being an actual director, and setting up your own scenes. Connor Whitt chose this class for his elective. He said, “I wanted to make films and be a good actor for movies.” He also said, “I learn information about how class movie making and acting started in the early days. This class gives me tips on how it all works.” The class helps you in everyday life if you ever want to be a movie director. It helps you with all the angles and you also learn how to edit and to make the lighting good. Students should chose this elective if they are interested in movies or in a movie career because it gives you a lot of skills. Mr. Moreno said, “This week we are directing the scary movies. It gives them a chance to learn how the special effects are made.” Students will proceed to make more movies like a reality show of their choice and a musical montage. They will have a story line background to music of their choice.

Choir
By: Diana Faure
Our CCI Jaguar Choir is back and better than ever. The choir directors, Mrs. Smith and Ms. Johnson, have completely re-arranged the choirs into what they feel to be, “Best suited for each persons voice.” Mrs. Smith said, “I know every single voice since the beginning of the year. I put them in the choir I felt to be best fitted for their voice so there is more support added to the choirs.” Rachel Jurbala is looking forward to choir this year because, “This year I am in Symphonic and I feel like I’m held to a higher standard." Jarren Galvan and Max Flores both stated that they like choir because they are both in a leadership position and they like the responsibility at hand.
Bro Night was a success. Michael Walding liked Bro Night because all of his friends were there and they had a Nerf Gun war. “Something we did was have a food eating contest. Honestly my favorite part was when I hid in the trash can for the Nerf war. The night was great because all my friends were there,” said Michael.
“Choir Sister Night was really fun because I got to hang out with my new ‘little sister’ and we ate a lot of food. It was also really fun because of the scavenger hunt we had,” said Alexis Daniels.
The 6th grade choirs had their very first choir concert. “My favorite part was when we sang ‘Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel’ because we got to sing with the ladies,” said Micah Guerrero. Jordan Herd said, “as much as I loved singing, my favorite part was actually after the concert when we went to Zoyo for frozen yogurt because we got to celebrate our first concert!”

ELA - Got Words?
By: Rachel Whitsett
ELA is off to a great start this year with lots of students learning more about reading and writing! Here is what students are saying about ELA!
Marie Demoss, in 6th grade, said, “My favorite part of ELA is reading. Right now we are reading the book ‘Freak the Mighty’ in class and I can’t get enough of it. I like the book because it never gets boring. Although I like reading, I’d rather write. I like seeing my sisters’ reaction to the stories and I like how Fiction books can create a whole new world similar to ours, but without the troubles we have. When I write, I usually write about sadness because I like to make people feel bad for the characters. I would like to be an author when I get older.”
Kameron Compton, in 7th grade, said, “My favorite part of ELA is the reading project we are doing. We have to read a fiction book and create a project of our choice about the book. I like reading more because you can read things that can expand your vocabulary and your imagination. When I write, I usually write about past experiences like vacations or lessons I’ve learned because it is a good way to remember what is important to you and why.”
Caroline Singletary, in 8th grade, said, “My favorite part of ELA is how much my teacher Mrs.Pedersen helps me and how she never stops helping us. I like reading more than writing because I just love getting into a good book and seeing things from the character’s perspective. When I read, I usually read realistic fiction or fantasy. When I write, I usually write about fun vacations I’ve been on because I have been on a lot so I never really run out of things to tell.”
